Paxil taper?

Postby PixieAK2308 » Tue Jun 18, 2013 11:40 am

Hi all!
I'm wanting to come off my Paxil and thought I would ask around to see if there is a right way or wrong way to do it? I've been on Paxil for a couple years and was always at 40mg. After my recent jump off suboxone, my doctor spiked my dose to 60mg. I was taking 60mg of Paxil since April. This past week, I decided to only take 40mgs. I have the 40mg tablets. Any suggestions here?

HI

I have a friend who was tapered off Paxil. Just stopping is not a good idea although after sub detox it may not even bother you. Can you talk to your doctor about the best way to come off?

Good Luck!

I've considered talking to my doc about tapering the Paxil. Since jumping off subs in April, I don't have the trust for doctors the way I used too. My family doc pretty much told me I was just being a big baby when I was a week into my sub detox. I've asked her before about coming off the Paxil and she pretty much told me to just quit taking it if I dont feel the need to take it anymore. I've forgotten to take my Paxil for 2 days once and ended up getting super dizzy and throwing up due to the vertigo. I'll probably give the doc another try so I can taper the paxil the right way. I'm getting married in September and we want kids pretty quick. Paxil cannot be taken while pregnant. I personally would like to be free of any medication while pregnant, and Paxil is the last med I'm on!

Pixie

I was exactly the same way as you many years ago when i wanted to get pregnant. I wouldn't even let anyone smoke pot in my apartment because i didn't want the second hand Pot smoke..i wanted to be CLEAN when trying to conceive  .
So your doctor said just quit.. :gaah: Well i am no doctor but if you got sick after 2 days no paxil then you know it is a drug that should be tapered. Set up a reasonable taper - you are down to 40 mg..you said they are tablets..so thats good, tablets can be split. Make up a taper for the next 8 weeks. That will have you off the paxil before the wedding. If you were to conceive on your honeymoon you will be clean. :D
Hope that helps you a bit..I know my friend is fine now..she is happy to be off everything & she feels well emotionally.

Thanks Emily!
And yes, I know it's the medicine making me sick when I stop taking it. The doctor said just to quit taking it. I hate doctors sometimes. I think I could be a better doctor sometimes. And in my field of work, I work with some dumb docs.
I'm glad to hear your friend feels good after coming off Paxil. I get nervous to come off of it because I'm only coming up on 90 days off subs and I hope my emotions don't get the best of me eventually lol.
I'm gonna do a taper and I have some nurses I work with helping me with the taper if I need some more info.
Thanks for your help!!
I'm excited to get off my last medication once and for all! I'll be totally free from All drugs when I am done with Paxil! :)

Hi Pixie,
I read this study about St. John's Wort being as effective as Prozac. I added it to my morning vitamins a month before my jump and this jump was SO much less stressful than the ones in the past ( I tried to jump four times last yr). Do you think it would help to step down to St. John's wort? Do you just want to be off everything, even if its over the counter? I'd eventually like to stop taking the SJW but like you mention, it might be a little too early in recovery to stop all antidepressants now. (I've got 60 days today) My counselor told me that they put everyone on a antidepressant for one yr after getting off opiates here. I'm pretty sure the SJW has helped my post detox depression..

Pixie

Jules has a good point. Maybe google or ask the pharmacist if you can take St Johns Wort with paxil or if you have to stop the paxil first. Sometimes you can't mix both.

Good for you wanting off all the drugs! You are young & should be clean & healthy & enjoy life!

I wish I found this site five years ago when I was taking myself off of Paxil ...

Several years ago, I was trying to get some issues I have with my nervous system diagnosed and my primary Dr suggested I try a low dose of Paxil. I think it was 10mg. Anyway, I took that for a couple years and never really felt anything, then on a follow up, the good Dr suggested I see a psychiatrist -- thinking my issues were all mental. I kept an open mind and saw a psychiatrist. He asked me a few questions then promptly diagnosed me as depressed and wrote up a script for 40mg of Paxil saying "I needed to be put on a theurupedic dose". So, I start taking it and after a couple days I did not feel right. I go for more tests and a super specialist found my issues to be purely physical, not mental, but he said it might help to continue taking the Paxil so that "I make more efficient use of seratonin". It sounded kind of wacky so I started to read about antidepressants and found that they don't even know how they actually work and it's all theoretical. After reading that, I decided to get the eff off of that stuff. Did I taper? No. I just stopped. What was it like doing that? It sucked big time. For three months I felt horrible like I had the flu with body aches. I knew it was because I stopped the Paxil and I should have tapered but by time I realized that it was too late. I wasn't going to take a low dose and start tapering. I decided to just ride it out thinking it can't last forever. I think it took a good six months before I felt normal. Looking back, I did it the wrong way and who knows maybe it was even dangerous to do that. For anyone trying to get off of Paxil, please taper. I don't know the proper way to taper, and maybe it would be good to discuss with your Dr. I look back at that six month period as a very bad time for me. One thing that might have helped was I started to take HTP which is a precursor for the brain to make seratonin. Maybe that helped. I still take it every night before I go to bed and it does help me sleep and if my body needed a seratonin boost, I think that is doing that. Everyone is different though so please be careful with tapering off this Paxil stuff. Whatever you do, don't just stop it like I did. That was a bad experience.
