you know how i'm always talkin about using aminos to restore neurotransmitters--how they are better than the ssri's without the side effects?? well, read this...ssri's are now believed to cause serotonin depletion--making you worse off than what you were! www.neuroassist.com/cutting%20edge.htm

the ssri's just keep the serotonin that you make from being broken down too quickly--if you aren't making enough in the first place, then the ssri's are pretty worthless. they were for me anyway. never heard of an a/d that suppressed serotonin--the idea is to raise serotonin. and, you're right--what is the "normal" range??? who knows--it's not like you can measure it in a blood test. as far as i know, that is.
Clint Posted - 12/24/2008 : 4:28:36 PM
when they (science at large) can come up with a brain scan that actually shows a person isn't producing enough serotonin, or too much. whats normal to begin with? Not to mention any other deficiencies in chemicals in the brain? Is a standard value even available yet, or is it guess work? Then i'll start buying into the AD's, which i don't as of now. Had a bad experience with Effexor, made me more edgy and tempermental. Had to taper down as well, but wasn't too bad as i wasn't on much longer then 6-8 weeks. When i knew it wasn't something i was going to take anymore due to feeling worse off then before taking it.

I don't believe science knows enough about depression causes to begin with. I may be wrong here but isn't depression supposedly linked to lower serotonin levels, as well as high serotonin levels?? It was my understanding some Ad's suppress serotonin production and some accelerate production?

I can tell anyone this though for fact. As someone who has pursued weightlifting/strength training naturally for a many years. I never feel better then when i'm doing so, as i eat alot, good foods, plus drink plenty of weight gainers and protein powder mixed with milk. Very high amino acid profiles in weight gainers and protein powders.

he does sound interesting, but what's the price tag???

Vigorous...like boxing, running, swimming....Exercise the only true alternative that is fast acting. Produces endorphins in brain, pronto. Tricky using aminos for depresssion but doable if you can pin point exactly wht part of the brain is being affected. A Dr. Amen in California (branch office for east caost in Virginia) is best expert on this. He doesn't toot his own horn on his site. I however have seen examples of the 15,000 brain scans he has made over that last 10 years from which he has deduced a plan of action to help people speicifcally for deficiences in variopus pprts of the brain. You go to this guy, he scans your brain for "hot spots" adn then shows you where you brain is awry. Then you take the correct amino acids...no hit and miss)...or if warranted SSRI's.

kelli, this is jsut the kind of thing you are interested in. Call him up and get info...or his video. I saw it in Atlanta...plus page after page of images of scanned brains with expantions of what they needed. I think this guy is real thing.

there have been some recent studies that showed the ssri's were no better than a placebo. i know i feel better off them than i ever did on them.

This is biased info. And ssri's have helped many many people.
Everybody who jumps on the holistic bandwagon starts trashing all medicines. Not smart.
Accupuncture didn't do crap for me.As other alternative methods I tried-kept an open mind-lol.Waste of money

what gets me is that when I told my dr that i was feeling worse he wanted to change to a different AD. i told him no and he then suggested that i increase my dose of cymbalta! he has a crap load of samples and has been giving those to me all these months! so that just shows that it's the pharm reps that are pushing this shit and the dr's are giving them out for all the freebies they get in return. they don't care what is happening to the patient. why would they? if i am feeling like shit, what do i do? i go to the dr's and he gets even more money! they like to keep the man down imo

i just don't understand why dr.s keep praising the ssri's and prescribing them for everyone when they know they make you worse in the long run!???
julie1129 Posted - 11/03/2008 : 10:27:36 AM
Yeah, I was on ADs for about 8 months. Felt awful. Been off for about two months and feel GREAT! Haven't felt this good in a LONG time! I don't think I'll ever take another AD in my life!

And you guys are right, doctors hand these things out like candy!! It's crazy.

If need be in the future, I'll definitely try the aminos or supplements before I EVER take another AD again!

Kelli...Thank you for all the info! You know I CT off cymbalta and I have felt like SHIT for the past few weeks. Brain Zaps and all around feeling like crap. I have been taking all the supps you advised (that I can get right now) and I went and got my St. Johns Wort! It's only been a few days on the St. Johns Wort, but I am hopeful that it will help soon....

So KUDOS to Kelli.....

this is another really good link for anyone taking a prescription a/d, such as ssri's ssni's etc.. www.neuroassist.com/reuptakeinhibitors.htm

the link you provided is great information.. Thanks for providing it. I have started a file with all the information you and others provide here that has anything to do with helping the detox of opiates..I plan on printing it all out and giving the file to my doctor when the time comes for me to jump. I can't even think about that now because in all honesty I am scared shit about it. The holidays are coming and as much as it sounds like a complete cop out and poor excuse I have decided to wait until the new year.
I can't picture trying to jump when I am going to have to be on my game during the next 2 months..I have to be able to function... for myself, my kids, my husband and family. There is too much to do for the holidays and for me to prepare and make it special for my family. I won't allow my detox or anticipation of it to get in the way.
I don't know if this is the right approach. What do you guys think?

I am going to do the drop to .75 again tomorrow. I think I will stay on that for a month and go from there. By January I should be down to .25 or dust and then I can focus and be able to give this jump 100% effort..

i know, i don't know why dr.s are so quick to prescribe them. now they are finding out that they make you worse in the long run--but they keep prescribing them. the makers of neurotin are getting sued now too. they were claiming that neurotin did all kinds of things that it does not do. they lied--wow what a surprise!!

Yes, it amazes me, SSRI's have been known to be dangerous for years, yet many doctors prescribe them without hesitation for anything and everything. You have pain, lets try this AD, and if it doesn;t work, we'll try anotehr. never mind finding out what the underlying cause might be, just take a pill and see what happens

I remember my accupuncture dr, saying the majority of her patients came to her because they were messed up from SSRI's, and many had neurological problems from taking them for years.

i can't edit for some reason...but this group of doctor's are also recommending amino acid therapy (ntr--neurotransmitter restoration) for people who are detoxing. lots of treatment centers are now doing this--most are giving the aminos IV, but it's pretty expensive. taking pills is ok, just takes longer--but this is increasing the success rate up to 80%--for people who stay clean!
